At Round Rock Eye Consultants, we work with many patients who are diagnosed with cataracts. As a result, we have heard virtually every question under the sun. In this article, we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions in order to help you learn about this condition and how to treat it.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a cloudiness or haziness that appears on the lens of the eye. The lens is located between the front and the back of the eye, directly behind the pupil. Its role is to help focus light on the retina, which is where images are formed. The cloudiness of the cataract makes things appear to be blurry, hazy or less colorful or clear.

What causes cataracts? How can they be prevented?

The majority of cataracts develop due to aging. Cataracts may also be caused by an injury to the tissue of the lens. In addition, there are some genetic disorders, eye conditions, and medical conditions like diabetes that can increase your risk of developing cataracts. Extensive use of steroids overtime may also...

Cataracts and glaucoma are two of the most common eye conditions that naturally occur with age. This means that many individuals over the age of 60 have both. While these two conditions are not related, given it is common for them to co-occur, there are unique considerations to make.

A cataract is an eye condition characterized by the clouding of the lens of the eye. This blocks the entry of light, disrupting proper vision. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally. However, this condition is reversible with a cataract surgery called extraction.

Glaucoma is actually an umbrella term that describes a group of diseases. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. When you have glaucoma, the neurons of the optic nerve are damaged. Often there are no symptoms to glaucoma, and blindness occurs without warning.

Both are serious eye conditions that are common with age, and it’s common for individuals to have both. If you have both glaucoma and cataracts, there are some unique considerations to make.

If you’ve lived in sun-soaked Central Texas for a decade or so, you might be hearing the word “cataract” get mentioned with increasing regularity. A cataract is defined as “a clouding of the lens inside the eye.” It causes vision loss and cannot be corrected with glasses; instead, it has to be corrected with contact lenses, or a procedure such as a corneal refractive surgery. But, as concerning as this all may sound, we’re fortunate to live in the age of modern medical advances, and there are always new technologies surfacing to make curing vision ailments easier and more available to cure. Modern cataract surgery usually restores the lost vision and can even reduce how much you have to depend on eyeglasses in the future.

Cataract Issues In Your Vision

In general, most cataracts diagnoses happen to people who are over the age of 50, mostly because it’s linked to the aging process. It’s a pretty common ailment among aging US citizens. The prevalence of cataracts is actually anticipated to grow significantly in the next couple of years due as the aging...

Light is the reason we can see. It passes through the lens of our eye, reflects onto the retina and those messages are transferred to our brain to create a picture of our surroundings and the happenings going on near us. Blue light has become a trending topic because our increased use of technology: cell phones, tablets, computers is impacting our vision.

How The Light Spectrum Affects Your Retina

Sunlight alone contains a variety of different colors of light. It contains orange, red, yellow, green and blue light rays that make up natural lighting. They all come through the atmosphere at different wavelengths and this combined color spectrum comes together to create what we call “white light,” but is also known as just regular old sunlight. As you may remember from your 6th grade science class, wavelengths have an inverse relationship with frequency and strengths of the waves. Long wavelengths contain less energy and short wavelengths contain more energy in them. That being said, blue light has lots of energy in the wavelengths it’s transmitted...

How do you prevent cataract formation and what can be done about it? Let’s take a look.

What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is defined as “a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects the vision.” Most cataracts are, unfortunately, just related to aging. The condition is very common in older people, as a result. By the age of 80, nearly all Americans either have cataracts, or have already had surgery to fix their cataract. Cataracts are known for appearing in either one or both eyes but it’s not infectious and won’t spread to the other if you have it in one.

Cataracts occur in the “lens” of your eye, which sits behind the iris and the pupil. According to the National Eye Institute, it works, essentially, like the lens of a camera in that it focuses light back onto the retina of the eye, where the image is then recorded and translated by your brain. This lens adjusts the eyes focus, which allows us to see things clearly both up close and far away. It’s most prevalent building block is water and protein and those proteins are specially arranged in a...

In 2017, the FDA approved the sales of gene therapy treatment for inherited blindness and inherited eye diseases. While the treatment doesn’t completely cure blindness, it does allow patients to see shapes and lights so that they can get around and live normal lives without the aid of a cane of guide dog. It’s pretty incredible, and this is really only the beginning of the available applications for a huge variety of patients suffering from a huge variety of optical ailments.

Gene Therapies

Gene therapy is defined as “the use of genes to treat various medical conditions.” If that seems vague, it’s because it can be applied to almost anything, not just ophthalmology. The loose concept basically consists of transferring genetic materials into tissues, organs and cells with the aim of curing a disease or improving their clinical status. Ideally, the new genes from gene therapy will replace the faulty genes causing the illness and will encourage gradual genetic expression until they’re totally normal. Obviously, these breakthroughs have a wide range of...

The medical industry is extremely advanced in the modern era. Thus, it’s no surprise that a variety of state-of-the-art technologies have arisen to aid people in seeing better and making the most of their optic health. A semi-recent win for one of those incredible technologies is the fact that the FDA recently approved Raindrop near vision inlays for presbyopia. This is a groundbreaking step forward in ophthalmology that we’re excited to discuss with our patients who may suffer, or who currently suffer from presbyopia.

What Is Presbyopia?

If you find that you have trouble seeing or reading, you could have presbyopia. It’s classified as the “age-related loss of near vision,” and it starts to rear its head in most folks at the age of 40. This can appear regardless of whether you’ve experienced vision problems in the past or not. However, as soon as these symptoms start to pop up you don’t have to start investing in reading glasses and squinting at labels, as there are other options for you, specifically a Raindrop near vision inlay. A couple of years...

An estimated three percent of the U.S. population has amblyopia. Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a common vision development disorder. Amblyopia occurs when an eye does not reach normal visual acuity, even if glasses or contacts are worn. Generally, this condition begins in infancy, and usually only affects one eye, though it sometimes can occur in both eyes.

If treated early in life, an individual with amblyopia can avoid vision loss. However, left untreated, the eye can permanently lose vision.

Symptoms of Amblyopia

It can be difficult to spot lazy eye in infants. If you have noticed that your infant or young child has an apparent eye misalignment, such as crossed eyes, it’s important for you to immediately bring them in for eye care in Round Rock. Early intervention by an eye doctor is of the utmost importance.

You can also check to see if your child may have amblyopia through a simple screening test you can do at home. All you have to do is cover and uncover their eyes (one at a time) while they are looking at something; for...

You may have never heard of presbyopia, but it’s an incredibly common condition — it’s estimated that almost two billion people have it across the globe.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the term used to describe the loss of near-focusing ability that normally occurs when we age. The majority of people will begin to notice that they struggle to see small print after the age of 40 — you might begin straining to read text messages, for example. Even if you have never had a vision problem before, presbyopia is not something that you can avoid. If you are nearsighted and wear glasses or contacts to correct your distance vision, you may still notice that your near vision is blurry.

Though presbyopia is normal, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take a toll. Many people feel emotional in response to this because it’s a clear sign of aging. Without an eye doctor and proper vision care, presbyopia can significantly impact quality of life.

Presbyopia Symptoms

If you are over the age of 40, you can tell you are becoming...

AMD, or age-related macular degeneration isn’t an easy thing to be diagnosed with, especially if you have no idea what it is. Like any serious diagnosis, patients will need to educate themselves about this condition. Our award winning ophthalmologist at Round Rock Eye Consultants has the expertise to help battle this disease, and we are here to support you.

What is AMD?

Most people over the age of 50 face vision loss because of AMD, a rather common eye condition that causes damage to the “macula.” Your macula is the small spot near to the center of your retina. It’s the portion of your eyeball that provides sharpened, central vision and lets us glimpse and analyze the things straight in front of us. The progression of the disorder can either be quite quick or rather meandering, and the effects (general vision loss) are reflected in the speed your AMD decides on. The most common symptom of a more rapid progression of the disease is a blurred effect near the center of the field of...

If you’ve been experiencing issues with your eyes, it can be nerve-racking not knowing what’s causing it or how to fix it. There are a number of issues that could be affecting your eyes such as cataracts, myopia, and astigmatism. However, in this blog, we’re going to focus on a specific issue known as macular degeneration.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

With over 10 million Americans affected by macular degeneration, it is the leading cause of vision loss, as much as both glaucoma and cataracts combined. Although it is currently considered an incurable eye disease, your eye doctor may still be able to help prevent further deterioration and improve visual function.

Types of Macular Degeneration

“Dry” and “wet” are the two basic types of macular degeneration. The large majority of cases of this disease are “dry” (atrophic) while only around 10 to 15 percent of cases are “wet” (exudative). Macular degeneration is almost always age-related. However, Stargardt disease is one type that is caused by a recessive gene and can be...

Two common questions patients have about cataract surgery is how long it will take to recover after the surgery is complete and what will be required of them post-surgery. Understanding the recovery process for cataract surgery is helpful both for patients and for the patient’s caregivers. If you have any further questions about the cataract surgery recovery process, don’t hesitate to contact your local eye doctor at Round Rock Eye Consultants.

Cataract Surgery Recovery

The first thing to note about post-surgery recovery is that your vision may be blurry and your eyes may be very sensitive to light at first. Don’t worry though. This is not permanent. Your eyes need time to heal and adjust. Fortunately, your eye doctor will provide you with special glasses that will help protect your eyes on your way home from the procedure. Your eye doctor will also provide you with a shield that you should wear at night. This will prevent you from bumping or poking your eye while sleeping.

Following cataract surgery, it’s not unusual to feel some itchiness,...

Our eyes are one of the most important organs in our bodies. It’s our sense of sight that affords us the ability to see all the wonderful sights there are around the world, while at the same time, being aware of any threats in our environment. Although most people make it through life without losing their vision entirely, deterioration in vision as we age is still a common issue. One cause of this reduction in quality of vision is called cataracts. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at cataracts as well as educate you on lenses options that will be available for your cataract surgery.

What Are Cataracts?

Many people think that when it comes to vision, you either have it or you don’t. Although certain conditions such as vitreous haemorrhage, damage to the retina, and other serious medical conditions like strokes or brain tumours can lead to immediate loss of vision, cataracts are not one of those.

In both of our eyes, there is a lens that refracts light that passes through it. However, in order for light to pass through this lens, it needs...

Hello, and welcome back to our blog. This is part two of our blog series about cataracts prevention. As we mentioned in our previous article, unfortunately there’s no way to definitively prevent cataracts. Although there are ways to reduce your chance of contracting the condition, it usually occurs for age-related reasons and occurs in almost half of Americans over the age of 80.

Quit Smoking

With more than 5,000 chemicals found in cigarettes, there are a whole host of eye-related issues linked to smoking, chief among them are two of the leading causes of vision loss in America: macular degeneration and cataracts. People who smoke heavily have double the risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts begin when the clear, natural lens in your eye begins to turn cloudy with time. According to health specialists, smoking alters the cells in the eye and the lens by the process of oxidation, increasing the rate at which cataracts take effect. Avoiding cigarettes will not only help you prevent eye-related issues, but will also reduce your risk factor for...

In America, 22 million people over the age of 40 have cataracts. And by the age of 80, over half of Americans have some degree of cataracts. Worldwide, more people have cataracts than diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma combined, according to Prevent Blindness America.

Although the widespread nature of cataracts may appear like a huge issue, the good news is that we have very effective ways of treating it through both traditional cataract surgery or laser-assisted cataract surgery. Additionally, there may be several things you or a loved one could do in order to reduce the risk factory of contracting cataracts. In this blog, we’ll provide you with some helpful tips for preventing cataracts. If you have any questions or you’re looking for surgical treatment for your cataracts, don’t hesitate to contact your local ophthalmologists at Round Rock Eye Consultants.

Can Cataracts Be Prevented?

One mistake that many people make when it comes to eye health is that they assume it only applies to older folks. Although vision loss is often age-related, problems can still develop early in life and in adulthood. Much like hearing, our sight tends to degrade over time and culminates into more serious problems later in life. Adults should schedule regular eye exams to check for early signs of disease and catch any problems that may be occuring before they get too bad. For children, eye exams are an important part of development.

Children

For children, eye exams help to ensure that their eyes are developing without issue. Children who have poor eyesight may not perform well in school or in sports. If they’ve lived with this issue all throughout childhood, they may not know what normal vision looks like, so it’s difficult to diagnose anything without taking them to an eye care specialist.

What many people don’t realize is that vision and learning are very closely linked. As much as 80 percent of the learning process is visual according to the...

It’s not uncommon to develop cataracts at an older age. In fact, according to Kellogg Eye Center, about 90 percent of people over age 65 have a cataract and 50 percent of people between 75 and 85 have already lost some vision due to this condition.

As our eyes age, the lens inside the eye begins to cloud leading to a cataract. Unfortunately, unlike the normal degradation of vision over time, cataracts can’t be treated with glasses or contacts, or LASIK, a corneal refractive surgery.

Not only will modern cataract surgery restore the vision that was lost, but it can also reduce your dependency on glasses or contacts. Although roughly 24.4 million Americans have cataracts, cataracts surgery is known as one of the safest and most effective medical procedures nowadays and has a high success rate. As a testament to that fact, around 3 million cataract surgeries are performed each year in the United States. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about cataracts and cataracts surgery.

We all know that feeling of coming home after a long day and having sore, dry eyes from trying to keep our eyes open all day to get some work done. But having dry eyes every once in a while usually isn’t a huge problem. What’s more concerning is when this dry eye symptom lasts for days or months at a time, causing a significant amount of discomfort and most likely distracting you from your work and doing the things you love. This is known as chronic dry eye. But dry eye can lead to a lot more than just discomfort, it can be a serious condition if it’s not treated properly. In this blog, we’re going to talk a little bit about what causes dry eye and why you should seek treatment for it immediately.

Causes of dry eye

There is really only one thing that can result in dry eye and that is your eye doesn’t have enough quality tears to keep it lubricated and nourished. These tears are absolutely essential for maintaining the front surface of your eye as well as allowing you to blink and see properly. Every time you blink your eye, tears are spread across the cornea in order...

We’ve all been there, we drag ourselves out of bed only to remember that we went to bed late and got less than seven hours of sleep. Doctors have always stressed the importance of an adequate night’s sleep and its effects on your general health and well being. According to a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study, more than 40 million Americans get less than six hours of sleep each night. Although most Americans understand that sleep deprivation can have side-effects on your health, many people don’t know that it can affect your eyesight.

Eye spasms

In order to be full replenished, your eyes need at least five hours of sleep per night and without that, they won’t be able to function properly. A common sign that you haven’t been getting enough sleep is that you’re experiencing eye spasms. Spasms will occur in your eyelid and are involuntary twitches that can not only be distracting, but can be a sign of other health issues. These spasms are known as myokymia and typically don’t occur in people who are well rested and have had over seven...

Mom always told you to put safety first, and that’s especially important when it comes to eye care in the workplace. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), there are around 2,000 workplace eye injuries that require medical attention. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to be afraid to go outside and go to work, it just means that people should be better educated on the risks of their job, how to prevent them, and in case of an emergency, know how to treat the condition until a eye care specialist can inspect it. In this blog, we’re going to talk about workplace safety for your eyes, what you should know, and how to apply this knowledge to your job.

Causes of eye injury

Chemicals and foreign objects are the two biggest culprits of eye injuries at work. Some other common issues include burns from grease or oil, steam, or radiation exposure like ultraviolet or infrared. Additionally, workers may experience damage to their eyes from the sun or from welding if they don’t wear proper eye protection. Oftentimes...

Limit your screen time

One thing we’re all guilty of is looking at screens too much. We carry our phones everywhere we go, stare at computers while we’re at work, and watch television when we get home. What you may not be aware of is that overexposure to these devices can cause vision damage, sleep issues, and more due to blue light. You should encourage friends and family to limit their time spent in front of screens and to take breaks regularly.

Are you someone who always has to prepare for the worst when it comes to seasonal allergies? If you’ve been experiencing bad allergies this winter, it could be due to mountain cedar trees, the most allergenic trees in Central Texas. This is the only tree that pollinates well into winter and as such, is considered one of the most dreaded allergens in the region. Your typical allergy symptoms occur when your body recognizes harmless particles like dust, dander and pollen and fights it as if it were a serious threat. Some people get worse allergies than others because not everyone has a hyperactive immune system that will attempt to fight off these allergens.

Symptoms of cedar fever

Cedar fever has all the same symptoms of regular allergies: sore throat, itchy and runny nose, and watery eyes, only with increased exposure, there’s a higher risk of developing a respiratory disease. According to the World Allergy Organization Journal, people are more likely to experience asthma attacks after prolonged exposure to allergens.

If you’re someone who...

Have you thought of getting cataract surgery? You’ll often be offered either traditional cataract surgery or laser cataract surgery. Although these two procedures may seem similar at first glance, there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to each so it’s important to understand which one is right for you before making any commitments. Traditional cataract surgery is a very common surgery that is proven to be safe and create lasting results. However, laser cataract surgery may provide you with benefits that traditional cataract surgery would not.

If you have any questions or concerns about whether you should be getting cataract surgery, please don’t hesitate to contact your ophthalmologists at Round Rock Eye Consultants.

Traditional Cataract Surgery

Traditional cataract surgery (also called phacoemulsification) is a process where your eye surgeon will make a small incision on the side of your cornea. An instrument will be inserted behind the pupil and the surgeon will use a circular opening in the lens capsule. A probe is used to break up...

An OCT scan, or an Optical Coherence Tomography is a procedure that uses light waves to take pictures of your retina from the side. OCTs allow an ophthalmologist to map each layer of your retina and diagnose issues if they’re present. In addition, an OCT scan can provide guidance for treating glaucoma and other retinal diseases.

How the procedure works

When you go in for an OCT scan, your ophthalmologist may dilate your eyes by using eye drops in your eyes that are designed to widen your pupil and make it possible to get a good view of your retina. Before you begin the procedure, you will sit in front of the OCT machine and it will begin to scan your eye. Don’t worry, this is a painless procedure! The machine will not touch your eye, and your head will be stabilized with a head rest. Scanning will take around 5-10 minutes to complete and due to the dilation, you may be sensitive to light after the procedure.

What it means for you

OCT scans are good for diagnosing conditions such as age-related macular degeneration,...

What Causes Eye Allergies?

Eye allergies run amok during the fall season, and affect people of all ages. Airborne allergens given off by various pollens, trees, grasses, weeds, and even mold spores enter the the body through the sinuses and also come into contact with the eyes. According to a report by John Hopkins Medicine, the immune system responds to these allergens by generating antibodies, which cause the eyes to release histamine—a compound released by the body’s cells to fight off an allergic reaction to a substance. The body’s overreaction to allergens causes symptoms that impact the sinuses such as frequent coughing, sneezing, wheezing, runny or stuffy nose, and of course, itchy, watery eyes. And while all eye allergies have similar symptoms, and may seem the same, there are actually two types: seasonal allergies, which are the most common, and perennial allergies that affect the immune system all year long.

Follow these Tips to Ease Eye Allergy Symptoms

There are many ways to relieve eye allergy symptoms.

Although this is a very exciting event, it raises concern for those of us in the eye care profession. Looking directly at the sun’s rays is never safe; however, viewing a solar eclipse during the partial phase without the proper protection is very dangerous and can seriously damage your eyes, and may even cause blindness. In today’s blog post, we will discuss viewing approaches to avoid, and we will explore several ways to maintain your eye safety while...

While hearing about “dry eyes” may not sound like a particularly alarming condition, anyone that has dealt with this issue would boldly state otherwise. Eyes that are feeling dry, itchy, or irritated are incredibly uncomfortable, to say the least. Today, our eye care team will cover some common causes and treatments of this condition.

Why You Have Dry Eyes & What to Do Next

There are plenty of things that can cause dry eyes, we’ll only be looking at the most common. Some of these are environmentally-based, meaning you can see relief by changing your situation, and others are more condition-based. In any case, be sure to contact your ophthalmologist whenever you’re concerned about a problem with your eyes!

Common Causes of Dry Eyes

  • Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, thyroid disease, and lupus

Depending on who you ask, you may receive a very different answer to the question “which is better, gas-permeable or soft contacts?” Unlike with many technological innovations, the creation of “soft” contact lenses did not make the more traditional gas-permeable lenses obsolete. Today, we’ll review the pros and cons of each to help you in deciding.

Pros and Cons of “Hard” and “Soft” Contact Lenses

As mentioned above, you can find fans of both types of contact lenses in all walks of life. What may be a selling point for some can be a major annoyance for others; disadvantages to one type of lense may be rendered entirely inapplicable to certain peoples. Check out our list of pros and cons and, after meeting with your ophthalmologist, decide for yourself which is best for you.

Soft Contact Lenses

While soft contact lenses have been around for many years, they’ve recently gained a large amount of popularity due to some advances in technology and plenty of aggressive marketing campaigns. For those with sensitive eyes,...

Glaucoma is categorized into two groups; Open angle or close angle. There are symptoms to be aware of if you think you may be suffering this eye disease.

Pain

Where pain is generalized in the eye area, there should always be some cause of concern. When you suffer from pain in an eye that is affected by glaucoma, you may be suffering from closed angle. Progressions of Cataracts from Your Eye Doctor

Blurry Vision

One of the initial signs of cataracts is blurred vision. This is not going to hinder day-to-day activities but may seem annoying from time-to-time. The blurriness won’t be constant, however, it will be noticeable. Many people compare it to looking at an unfocused painting or photograph. Over time, this cloudy vision will increase and will affect all activities until it is corrected with cataract surgery.

We, at Round Rock Eye Consultants in Round Rock, wanted to give you some information about how to help with the recovery of your cataract surgery. Our eye doctor wants you to be fully prepared and know how to bounce back quickly from your cataract procedure, so you can get back to doing the things you love, and feel self-sufficient again.

What to Expect

After your cataract surgery, you may notice that your vision seems cloudy. Cloudy, blurry or distorted vision after your surgery is completely normal, and we don’t want you to be alarmed by it. It takes your eyes some time to adjust from the cataract that was removed to the new lens that's been put in its place.

Not only will your vision be a little off, your eyes may appear red and bloodshot. This is another common side effect and is caused by the blood vessels being damaged during the surgery. As your eye begins to heal itself, this redness should dissipate.

If your anesthesia was injected right under the eye, you may appear to have a black eye This will also go away with time and...

ROUND ROCK, TEXAS -- When ophthalmologist, Joseph Meyer first began seeing patients in Round Rock in 1998, the population was 61,000. That kind of relationship is very fulfilling, as well as a pretty good reminder that time marches on.”

Citing changes in healthcare that have created a trend where physicians are often unable to provide as personalized care as they had in days gone by, Dr. Meyer said, “Round Rock Eye Consultants is small by design--focused on bringing back the attentive care of the local hometown...

Retinas perceive the world very differently.

Upside down

When an image comes into your line of vision, your retina actually perceives the image upside down. This is because of the light that enters the cornea is always curved, and is bending the light, causing the upside-down image on the retina. Your brain is actually the source that corrects the image so that we see it right side up.

Split up Not only are the images upside down, but they are also split in half by your retina as well! Your brain yet again has to decode the image, not only flip it right-side up, but decode...

What is it?

Astigmatism is an eye condition that originates in the cornea. Normal corneas have a nice round shape, similar to a basketball. An eye that has astigmatism will have a shape closer to an almond, comparable to a football.

Why is this a problem?

It affects the way light passes through the eye. When light enters a round shaped eye the light will distribute evenly causing things in your vision line to be clean and crisp. When astigmatism is present the light cannot enter evenly and this causes blurry, and insignificant vision.

How do I know I have it?

Your vision will usually be blurry and focusing on images will be difficult. This will cause your eyes to strain and squint which then will cause headaches, and difficulty driving,

Now, what?

Just checking for distance vision during an eye test is much like reading the back cover of a novel and stopping. You're missing most of the story. There is not an eye doctor out there that would state that distance vision tests tell them all they need to know about your eye health or vision acuity and you shouldn't be satisfied with just screening for that. Because healthy vision is a multi-faceted aspect of overall wellness, it is important that your annual eye exam is comprehensive in nature, including all tests and procedures possible.

With another school year starting soon, it is a great time to schedule your eye test along with your children's, regardless of their age. All-inclusive eye exams should always include the following:

Acuity tests - Eye charts are a fundamental tool for testing distance vision and is what people often think about when eye tests are mentioned. However, as stated above, they only deliver part of your vision story. Vision acuity tests should always measure your near vision too.

Color blindness test - Color vision tests are...

We're about to lay some education on the parents of school-age children. Those annual school-provided vision screenings that you rely on to tell you all about your child's eye health? They're simply not good enough. Not if you need them to tell you everything you need to know about potential eye problems and vision issues. Which is why the start of every school year is a great reminder to schedule a more comprehensive eye exam with your local eye doctor.

Basically, during a school vision test, the main objective is to check your child's distance vision. With a chart set at about 20 feet away, each child will be asked to read certain lines on the chart. But that's pretty much it. More comprehensive tests may include color vision in younger children but near vision is rarely tested.

Unfortunately, these basic tests overlook a variety of other health health components too. It is estimated by many experts that as many as 20 percent of school-age children suffer from vision problems that aren't going to be discovered by a school screening. Though they may pass the 20/20...

When the average person hears that someone they know and love has developed cataracts, they rarely think to ask what type. It is a common, but erroneous, belief that cataracts are all the same. In reality, there are three common types of cataracts affecting people of all ages. These types include nuclear sclerotic, cortical and posterior subcapusular. These types can develop singularly or in combinations.

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts

Related to aging eyes, nuclear sclerotic cataracts are the most common type. This type causes the eye's ability to focus to change with time. Where close-up vision may improve temporarily, the hardening of the lens will eventually cause diminished and increasingly blurry vision. With nuclear sclerotic cataracts, vision issues may take years to develop.

Cortical Cataracts

Referring to the cloudy areas that develop in the lens cortex, cortical cataracts are notable by the spoke-like fissures that develop from the outside edge of the lens and forming toward the center. Problems with glare,...

CATARACTS

With more than half of all Americans projected to develop cataracts in their lifetime, the eye disorder should be taken seriously by everyone, regardless of age. According to the National Eye Institute, the prevalence of cataracts in Americans is on the rise. From 2000 to 2010, the country saw an increase of 20 percent in cases, rising from 20.48 million to 24.41 million in the first decade of the century. The next few decades continue the trend at an alarming rate with cases expected to almost double by 2050 with 50 million cases of cataracts.

How can you prevent becoming just another statistic affected by cataracts? By first understanding the early signs of cataracts and developing a health plan, you can help slow their development as you age.

Here's what to look for:

  • Early stage warnings - The first signs of cataracts can be easily mistaken for near-sightedness and include difficulty seeing at night, halos or rings around lights, blurry vision and faded colors. Trouble dealing...

Look, it comes as no surprise to us that people avoid getting their annual eye exam. Health exams of any kind are not exactly the way most people would prefer to spend their day and eye care appointments are no different. The strange equipment, the insecurity about whether "one" was better than" two", that annoying puff of air, the confusion of whether the eye chart line read A D E or something completely different; all add up to an hour full of anxiety and unease. But there are two things to keep in mind during your eye exam to feel more relaxed:

1. There are no wrong answers so answer freely.

2. At least you're not at the dentist.

Seriously though, there are a few things you can do to make your visit much more seamless, getting you on your way and making your exam as efficient as possible.

Before your eye exam make sure to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Have I noticed any problems with my vision? Blurriness, flashes of light, double vision, floaters or difficulty seeing at night?...

Many Americans assume that glaucoma is an eye disorder that only affects the elderly. Unfortunately, this is just another of the many misconceptions of glaucoma. As the second-leading cause of blindness in the world, the need to educate people of all ages on the seriousness and facts about this group of eye diseases remains imperative. According to the The Eye Diseases Prevalence Research Group, it is estimated that more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only about half of them are aware of it. Glaucoma is not painful and the most common form offers no warning signs or symptoms. Because people of all ages are at risk for glaucoma, African Americans in particular, yearly visits to your preferred ophthalmologist is imperative.

Left untreated, glaucoma...

When Nichole's sensitivity to glare and lights began to be more than a passing annoyance, causing her to have to pause in order see completely clearly again, she wanted to simply pass it off as a symptom of growing older. She just passed her 50th birthday so it would make sense. So it came as a complete surprise when her eye doctor explained to her that she was actually showing the first signs of cataracts. Of course, Nichole took the news with seriousness and listened with concern as her doctor explained what she could about delaying their further growth.

Being the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40, cases of cataracts outnumber those of macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy combined. Fortunately, there are measures we can all take to prevent their formation, allowing us to see more clearly as we age. These preventative steps can keep cataracts at bay:
