1. Get Routine Comprehensive Eye Exams Having your eyes checked regularly is one of the most important ways you can to maintain optimal vision health. A comprehensive eye exam allows our vision experts to fully examine your eyes, so that we can screen your vision for any possible eye problems or diseases. Additionally, an eye exam helps determine the proper prescription strength should you need glasses or contact lenses.

2. Wear Computer Glasses Computer glasses are extremely helpful for protecting your eyes from eye strain at the office. Not only are computer glasses customizable, they come in stylish designs and colors, and most importantly, help protect your eyes from the blue rays emitted by computer screens that cause your eyes to squint and strain. If your regular prescription glasses or contacts are not helping to alleviate eye strain, talk with Dr. Joseph Meyer, our award winning eye doctor at Round Rock.

3. Take Regular Breaks Staring at a glowing computer or tablet screen for extended periods of time causes the eyes to strain. While it can be difficult to pull yourself away from the computer screen, it is imperative to take small breaks every 20 minutes or so to help reduce eye strain. Get up, walk around, stretch, or walk to grab some cold water. Not only will your eyes get a break from the screen, your neck and back will get some relief from sitting at your desk. If you’re too busy to get up, try looking away from your screen for 20-30 seconds to alleviate eye strain. Try performing some eye rolls by gently your rolling eyes clockwise and then counterclockwise. You can also do some light neck stretches while sitting at your desk to help loosen any tense muscles, which can help reduce muscle tension in your head and around the eyes. Try performing some eye rolls by rolling eyes clockwise and then counterclockwise. You can also gently cup your eyes for 20-30 seconds to shield them from light in the office.

4. Modify Your Computer & Office Lighting It’s a good idea to check your computer screen settings and make necessary adjustments to the contrast and brightness of the screen. Additionally, modify your office lighting to create a balanced atmosphere that isn’t too light (which can irritate the eyes) or too dark (which causes the eyes to strain). You can also gently cup your eyes for 20-30 seconds to shield them from light in the office.
